Luxuriously soft to the touch! Rich, full color
and smart styling will bring warmth, welcome and a handsome elegance to a room!

Velvet curtains have a luxuriant, rich look and they are heavy which is great
for keeping the light out and the heat in. Velvet refers to the soft, furry
covering on deer's antlers and velvet-effect material is produced from woven
fabrics made with cotton or man-made fibers such as polyester. Velvet has a
soft, deep pile which feels almost furry when you brush hand over it and gives
depth and richness to the color with strong contrast between light and dark.
Velvet curtains are ideal for bedrooms as they do keep the room completely dark
when they are drawn.

All my life, I’ve resided in Flushing, Queens without ever acknowledging the rich history of this historical neighborhood. I believe that the background of Flushing has truly been lost in oblivion over the past decade. For example, located on Northern Boulevard at the end of Main Street is one of the greatest treasures of Flushing, the RKO Keith’s Theatre. It was perhaps the most gracious of traditional movie palaces in New York City, with its luxurious interior and marvelous architecture. According to the Flushing Freedom Mile panel, the theatre opened on Christmas Day in 1928 throughout the mid-1980s. Architect Thomas Lamb used the Mexican Baroque style to design the grandiose building. Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Mae West, and other popular entertainers of the day played the Keith's. The ticket lobby and grand foyer of the Keith’s were listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, and granted landmark status by the City in 1984.

Although the RKO Keith’s Theatre still stands today, it is only a sleeping and deteriorating structure and a ghostly image of its past. Before learning about the history of the building, I would always pass by it on my way to or from home and grimace at the crumbling exterior and pitiable maintenance. It always gave me disturbing vibes since it looked like a haunted theatre, like something out of “The Phantom of the Opera.” I learned that the unfortunate fate of the building resulted from corruption under poor management after it was bought off by Tommy Huang in 1986. Huang announced plans of demolition in order to have a mega mall built in its place. After much controversy, Huang filed for bankruptcy in 1996 and for the past 20 years, the RKO Keith’s Theatre remains a neglected thorn on the side of Flushing. After learning about its tragic history and choosing this undeniable eyesore as the subject of my project, I am determined to revive the reputation the former prominent
Flushing theatre deserves.

My goal would be to transform the RKO Keith’s Theatre into a performing arts center to honor its storied past and to entertain the community once again. The newly-renovated theatre would feature all kinds of performing arts, from dance to opera, from every culture in order to serve the multicultural residents of Flushing. This project would amount to $100 million, to remodel the exterior, interior, walls, ceiling, main stage, and the carpeting. Red and gold will dominant the theatre as they were the initial colors Lamb built it in. During the evenings, the exterior of the theatre will project rich reds and gold beams of color against the ivory marble building, which will highlight a luxurious flowing “drapery” that is actually carved into the facade. To evoke a feeling of grandeur, the interior of the theatre will be adorned in more ivory, silvers, gold, and reds, such as the carpeting and the draperies and paint on the walls. The ceiling will hang an enormous downward-spiral
chandelier that will light the room with splendor. The spacious semi-circle performance room will have every visitor in awe with the elaborate colored light fixtures hidden on the ceiling and the opulence of the plush deep red velvet cushions. A grand stairway will dominant the lobby, built with granite stone complemented with a gold with silver lined railing, contrasting a scarlet red carpet laid against the stairs. The elaborate design of the theatre would contrast with its cluttered and primitive surrounding, making it the centerpiece of the Flushing neighborhood once again. My biggest goal in accordance to the revitalization of the RKO Keith’s Theatre will be to influence the residents of Flushing to appreciate the rich history of the neighborhood and to explore its roots, discovering what amazing things it has to offer.

ORPHEUM THEATRE
842 South Broadway
G. Albert Lansburgh, 1926

In 1926, this grand theater became the fourth and final home of the famed Orpheum vaudeville circuit in Los Angeles. As at his earlier Broadway Orpheum (now the Palace), architect G. Albert Lansburgh again employed a French theme inside the theater, this time executed in the full-blown grand manner. Polished brass doors, lush brocade drapery, silk wall panels, marble pilasters, and enormous chandeliers all contributed to an atmosphere reminiscent of the Paris Opera.

Throughout the years, the Orpheum has hosted some of the greatest entertainers in show business including Eddie Cantor, Sophie Tucker, Will Rogers, Jack Benny, Sally Rand, and Lena Horne.

The last of the great theater organs remaining on Broadway was installed at the Orpheum in 1928. This 13-rank, three-manual Wurlitzer organ has metal and wood pipes than can simulate more than 1,400 orchestral sounds. Now restored to working order, it is lovingly cared for by the Los Angeles Theater Organ Society.

In 2001 the Orpheum underwent a multi-million dollar rehabilitation under the supervision of owner Steve Needleman. The venue currently is a rental facility for special events and location filming.
